The Frog Gloves are the easier fist weapons to use but the Monkey’s ground pound alone makes it an even match. There are an absurd amount of rocket-powered animals in the game where one or even two could have sufficed. The first one players are likely to encounter is the Bulldog which plays a large role in Astro Bot’s first boss fight against Mighty Chewy. The Bulldog can rocket players forward and break through objects and surfaces like glass.

The post regarding the new Astro Bot update also teased new Special Bots for each stage, and gave the first look at the Atsu bot based on the protagonist from Ghost of Yotei. The rest of the new bots are based on fan-favorite Square Enix characters that PS5 players will certainly enjoy. These lovely gizmos are realized with a gift for tactility — for creating a toylike world you feel like you can reach out and touch, click, pop, squash, smash, crack, and squeeze — that is second only to Nintendo’s. Some of this stems from Team Asobi’s enthusiastic use of the DualSense’s rumble, haptic triggers, and speaker.
Samus, unfortunately, is still vulnerable to attacks in her ball form, so in a one-on-one dual, Astro Bot will probably come out on top. There is another rolling device worth mentioning in passing via an Armadillo which appears mostly in bonus stages. Players can ride on it but this Armadillo is more of a vehicle than a power-up as it doesn’t strap onto Astro Bot and thus doesn’t give him invulnerability. Astro Bot is challenging, but with a few helpful beginner tips, players can save their precious time. Other than these gameplay examples, the special bots in the game also have unique and special animations that you can unlock in the game’s Gacha Lab, which adds even more personality to the already amazing-looking models. Astro Bot is nothing short of a masterpiece, an ingenious platformer filled with vibrant worlds and ingenious design. It’s a game that oozes creativity, consistently delighting and surprising the player with new mechanics, gameplay twists, smart boss battles, and jaw-dropping set-piece moments.

Finding everything and everyone that the game hid across its levels has its rewards. It’s a highlight of how great Astro Bot’s level design is, which easily ranks high among other action platforming gems with its reasonably hidden secrets and gravity-challenging stages. Still, Astro Bot fails to feel as revolutionary or varied as games that pushed the genre, like Super Mario Odyssey. While the game has many exhilarating moments, Astro Bot’s desire to showcase PlayStation gear and characters can feel like it’s holding the game back from being something unique.

Even powers from previous Astro adventures are reinvented to great effect. For example, the Monkey Climber is an evolution of Playroom’s climbing ability, but the assistance of a small robotic ape with huge hands this time means rocks can be hurled and ground pounded to great delight. Laurels are never rested on either, with new ideas and gadgets introduced right up to the final encore. Although some mechanics are reused a little more than I’d like, when such powers are recycled in later levels they’re thankfully recontextualised and given slightly new uses. If 2020’s Astro’s Playroom was like a museum – albeit one with fun playable exhibits – Astro Bot is like a theme park, throwing a new thrill at you around every corner and after every double-jumped gap.
With the success of Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Team Asobi and Astro Bot jumped to the PlayStation 5. gg888 of the 11 levels can be found by finding a secret exit in various other levels throughout the universe. Sony and Team ASOBI have knocked it out of the park with this game, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this game is regarded as one of Sony’s best releases to date. Astro Bot hides over 300 secret bots, including 195 cameo bots from other games spanning PlayStation’s long history. Vicious Void is a galaxy that unlocks after clearing the main game. It contains special challenge levels, and each of them contains a Special Bot to unlock. Astro’s adventure takes him to various galaxies full of planets to explore as he tracks down his scattered crew.
But past that, it’s also a grand celebration of PlayStation and video game history as a whole — the only game that’s been able to rival Super Smash Bros. in that regard. Astro Bot is easily the best game on the PS5 to date and a platformer that can proudly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with anything Mario has done. Astro is revived by his Dual Speeder, a smaller spaceship resembling the DualSense controller, and together they begin reactivating satellites and exploring galaxies to rescue the crew and rebuild the mothership. Along the way, he rescues V.I.P. Bots (guest characters from other games) and explores planets based on Ape Escape, God of War, Uncharted, LocoRoco, and Horizon.
The crash site hub world has its own areas to explore and is packed full of quirks, such as eventually letting you customise your ship and outfit. The gacha machine mechanic makes a particularly enjoyable return, providing a satisfying way to spend the thousands of coins you’ll collect. It’s not brand-new for the series at this point, but still hits all the right spots. Some of those biggest unexpected treats are the new powers that Astro gets along his journey. The basic movement of our little robot pal is great, with his jump, double jump, and hover hitting that sweet spot between floaty and finely tuned.
This means that after the thrill of the game’s nostalgic moments wears off, there is not much reason to play after its 15 hours are up. With the basics on lock, Team Asobi lets players focus on Astro Bot’s wildly inventive level design. In one level, I get a power-up that lets me shrink Astro down to the size of an ant on command.
If people want to “ruin their experience” as you say, then let them. @2huwman Some people are just like that, they can still enjoy the game but some might be completionists who want to get everything in the quickest time they can due to having many other games to play as well. @get2sammyb people can do what they want but I wouldn’t say it’s totally fine. Part of the enjoyment of games like this is discovering stuff and figuring out puzzles. Using a complete walk through from day one just reduces the amount of enjoyment you can have. Winter Wonder is a DLC level that unlocks after clearing the main game.
That being said, I will buy this for sure, but I won’t spend a penny over £30. But oh it’s fine in Ark because it fits the cave people putting things together. Why do devs have so little imagination is the kind of question i find myself asking a lot these days. You’re really overthinking the number at the end of the review.
